The Space Above the Sea was written for the Beverly Middle School Percussion Ensemble in Beverly, Massachusetts, Alexis Carr and Nicholas Krafka, directors.

It will be premiered by the ensemble on June 7th, 2022.

Program Notes

When you are in Beverly, Massachusetts, you are very close to something truly amazing. Looking across Beverly Harbor, you can see both endless space and endless sea. And in that space and sea, there is an endless supply of fuel for our imaginations. Thinking about those who have been brave enough to explore the unknown in their sailing ships and flying machines is always inspiring. The beauty of floating clouds on the wind or the moon rising over the ocean can leave us almost breathless with wonder. In fact, it was the view from Beverly Harbor that inspired the second movement of my piece Moonrise, entitled The Moon Holds My Heart. The Space Above the Sea attempts to capture a small amount of the wonder, beauty and majesty of the view from Beverly.
