A cricket sang and set the sun

A Cricket sang and set the sun is, on the surface, a simple piece. Still, I had a very difficult time finding a title that could express the emotions behind it. After weeks of moving from one title to another, I read a poem by Emily Dickinson that begins, "The cricket sang, And set the sun." With these few words Dickinson creates a beautiful image of day's end, but I chose these words less for their immediate imagery than for the ideas they represent. The beauty of a sunset or the familiar sounds of nature are often taken for granted and overlooked. But, when placed next to each other, they can challenge our perceptions of the world around us.
Does the tiny cricket really have the power to command the sun? In reality, no, but I like the idea of something so small being able to affect something so large. I like the idea of a piece of music, a song, changing day into night. I like how it reminds me of the simultaneous simplicity and complexity of nature, and I like that it reminds me that there are things we do not know or understand. All of this, and more, is contained in the simple beauty of a cricket chirping as the sun begins to set.
